Connecting more regularly and effectively with your Creative Mindset will increase your chances of driving innovation into your organisation. By accessing this zone, you solve problems more effectively, difficult situations in business are approached objectively and options on how to progress a new project become considered and well thought through. Admission to this heightened state of awareness is only possible when we do away with pride, black and white thinking, and dominant beliefs that distort a forward thinking mindset. Such interference results from deep-rooted prejudices, however, when we quieten the mind we tune into our inner voice, this produces clarity of thinking that delivers inspired focus and guidance. We enter the Creative Mindset through absolute silence and stillness – creating a successful business means working ‘on it’ and not ‘in it’, this means time is needed to escape the noise that comes with the day-to-day grind.
Successful business people in my experience allocate a significant proportion of their time to uninterrupted thought. Whilst hustle and bustle is familiar territory for ambitious people, so is solitude. It helps to work out solutions to the challenges and opportunities growth presents. By making time for silent reflection we hear much louder our inner voice. You will be surprised how effective it is in navigating your actions in the right direction.
The flashes of inspiration and fantastic ideas that we enjoy from time to time come from a completely relaxed state of mind, they don’t present themselves when we are anxious or stressed. Often the harder we try the further what we want to achieve moves away. This noise resulting from unhealthy states of mind totally dampen the voice of reason that lies deep within us.
Don’t use the excuse that you don’t have time for silent contemplation, let go of being too busy and allow your Creative Mindset to speak. Here are some simple steps:
- Write down the challenge, opportunity or issue you need to resolve – be precise and specific
- Repeat three times what you need answers to
- Find your place of sanctuary – no telephone, radio or noise of any kind
- Use the slow breathing to meditate on the challenge
- Do this for 15 minutes and at the end of the session – write down any ideas
The answer will come to you at the right moment. Practice is vital, you must be consistent and you must commit to this activity. No one is too busy to find 10-15 minutes a day. It is these moments of planning that will deliver a lifetime of freedom.

Our mind is constantly in dialogue with itself about what it is observing in the outside world. These internal discussions stimulate a whole raft of feelings and emotions some positive and others negative. As part of our conditioning for success and growth, it is vital that we listen very carefully to what we are saying to ourselves as this commentary can have a powerful effect on the shaping of our life and the business we run.
The debates can influence our outlook, what we want and what we believe – the perceptions that result from what we are thinking ultimately builds the framework for how we perceive the world – for many of us this perception is reality. Used correctly we can use mind discussions to give us exactly what we want, it will catalyse your route to success. However, if used the wrong way our dreams and aspirations can be seriously sabotaged by negative self talk. Think on!
Watch your thoughts; they become words.
Watch your words; they become actions.
Watch your actions; they become habits.
Watch your habits; they become character.
Watch your character; it becomes your destiny
Sustained periods of failure can lead to a decay of our internal motivation, incidents or experiences that resulted in humiliation, anger, disappointment, fear, hurt or injury can trigger a whole series of inner discussions that result in negativity. Moving into the winning zone means that you must be acutely aware of the words and thoughts that swirl around in your mind – you can quickly rewire your thought patterns by simply ignoring any negative self talk such as “I will never achieve”, “I just cant do it”. You must replace these with more positive words.
Some simple and easy steps can be embedded within your daily routine to ensure you eliminate the negative self talk that all too often stunts our personal (and ultimately, business) growth and hinders the progression to achieving our goals:
- Take time every morning to clear the mind of negative experiences that the day before held. Telling yourself that today will be better gets us off to a good start.
- Be constantly and consciously aware of what you are saying to yourself
- Stop judging what you see as being right or wrong, just accept it for what it is – by doing this you use far less emotional energy.
- Eliminate phrases such as I can’t – replace them with I can or I will
Internal self talk has a great influence on the outcome of your success, make it a habit to keep using positive phrases of thought – over time you will become more positive and the peaks and trough in your moods will flatten out – you will become energised by positive thoughts and you will attract circumstances and situations that match your frame of thought.

Personal development is the ultimate source of competitive advantage. When you stop learning you run the risk of your business becoming stagnant. Growing a business is one continuous learning journey and every new experience presents itself as an opportunity to acquire more knowledge. Entrepreneurial high achievers I have worked with are lifetime learners combining both formal and informal means of absorbing new information. What is your strategy for learning? The growth of a business takes many twists and turns and growth comes in chapters, each one presenting its own challenges – you need to be prepared.
Openly speak to mentors, your peer group and trusted colleagues and ask them how they think you can improve. What could you do better? Rate yourself out of 10 in each of these areas:
I have clear business and personal goals, they are pursued with a passion
I am resilient and deal effectively with setbacks when they arise
I take ownership for the decisions I make but I listen carefully to the views of people I trust
I am motivated and just get on with it – success is down to me
I am a strong and effective leader (myself and others)

By answering these questions honestly you start to build a picture of where your self-development needs to focus. Drill down into the specifics of each of your answer and define very clearly what things you are going to change. Identify the resources that you will need to move you on. Explore courses, new reading material, self-study or one to one coaching to address the shortfalls. Everyone has a preferred learning style, find one that suits you. However there is lots of wisdom in the Confucius philosophy of:
- I hear and I forget
- I see and I remember
- I do and I understand
The minute you think you know it all – complacency sets in and you could quite well be entering into dangerous territory.
You will not advance or achieve your business goals if you don’t commit to constantly learning.
I am constantly being asked – what are the ingredients of a great SME coach? There are some very common characteristics that comprise of:
- Business expertise
- Market knowledge
- Functional expertise – finance
- Marketing strategy etc.
These are all very relevant but in my experience there is far more to coaching and mentoring that sits outside just business and management expertise. I have coached literally hundreds of business people over the years as well as running my own businesses – what this experience tells me is that there are human beings with emotions and fears that sit behind the business plan and very often, the façade of success.
Growing a business is a lonely place to be, in many instances the founder and the team have hidden anxieties that relate to mundane yet crucial components to an individuals overall well being. The pressures that come with, for example, personal guarantees required by the bank, small pension pot, lack of savings, big mortgage……many of these lay dormant in the business persons mind because running the business is all consuming and nothing else matters.
For many entrepreneurs achieving a sense of freedom is the very reason they set up and often this freedom ends up feeling like a prison sentence. The old cliché, working on the business rather than in the business is so true – this is what great coaches do. They help businessmen and women take a helicopter view of their organisation and look at the big picture.
Great coaches in my view are a fusion of business expert and Samaritan. They are able to address personal and emotional anxieties as well as the business ones. They have an ability to connect with these issues in a highly practical way. The starting point for any coach is to understand the individual – what makes them tick, what keeps them awake at night, intentions and aspirations. Once this is worked out then the business becomes the engine to fulfill the entrepreneur’s needs and goals. All too often the business runs the individual – best coaches turn this round, sort of a Samaritan.
Anyone involved in sales and marketing will know about features and benefits – a legacy of the 70′s/80′s and 90′s school of selling. Whilst the underpinning principle in my view is sound – today we find customers are more discerning, wanting for far more, often for less! Over the past few years I have been exploring how the old school of selling (F & B) can be fused with a more powerful channel to communicating propositions – this has led me to adding impact and evidence to the old ways of doing things. I believe that when we combine F and B with I and E an extremely intense message is emitted to customers. Next time you are in a sales situation think about:
Impact – can you validate to customers: return on investment (ROI), cost savings, efficiencies, when you can demonstrate impact in terms of facts and figures the credibility of your proposition is just positioned on a new level – for example if you are an advertising agency, can you show the impact of your services on the clients budget of £X will give a return of £5X
Evidence– telling the customer that you are great is superficial and generic – in the case of the advertising agency the evidence should be – the names of three clients that have benefited from the services and indeed the added value brought to bear. Such an approach to selling is clear – there is no ambiguity.
I have observed many businesses embrace this F.B.I.E model of selling and proposition marketing . It can be applied to telesales, web communications, pitches and any other form of business development. When you think in terms of FBIE your messages become crisper and to the point – more importantly they will resonate with the customers world – it shows you are bothered and its not just about getting a deal. The term “thinking outside the box” is a constant irritation for me. Easy to say, hard to do – how do you do it? Get to the route cause!
Don’t fall into the trap of routine. Repetitive behaviours will deliver a mindset that lacks vision, imagination and creative spirit. When we do the same things day-in day-out we establish a routine, this state of mind both inhibits and prohibits new possibilities. We find that the same old problems surface and bizarrely we think that by doing the same thing over and over again the results will be different. We must be aware of our habits as they become hard wired into our daily schedule. The manifestation of routine is that we experience a sense of monotony, feeling of being stuck in a rut, poor self-confidence, low energy levels and loss of purpose and direction.
Everyone experiences these feelings at some point, however we can take some simple steps to rewire our thinking. Emphasis must be placed on constantly searching for stimulus – things that will disrupt habitual behaviour, strengthen our creative muscles and deliver a freshness of thought;
Alternative perspectives – constantly look at your challenges from different angles – ask yourself “how would your role model address the issue?”
Remove yourself – from the daily routine and spend one day a month do something completely different.
Connect with nature – spend time in the open air and appreciate the wonder of the countryside. Combine this with regular exercise, it provides a boost to our energy levels. It also helps us to value our existence.
Don’t Think – don’t pre judge the outcome of any situation. Just observe and detach yourself from comment. By not thinking you clear your mind.
Take a look – observe what your peers do and share experiences with them. Wherever possible engage with people from other cultures, religions and regions of the world.
Five simple practices will act the fuel for fresh thinking. Doing away with routine is a liberating experience. It energises us, and keeps us motivated to perform at high levels.
Success involves people and organisations having to sell what they have to offer – this could be our skill, a product or service. This term frightens the life out of many as it conjures images of unethical smooth talking individuals manipulating others so as to get their own way. This is not the case, a great pitch is grounded in ethical behaviour fused to a mindset of offering real value through a passionate belief in what you have to offer. Personal and professional progression means that you will frequently be in a situation where you have to pitch for what you want. Applying for a career promotion, a place on the school board or attracting new customers fundamentally means we are in competition and there is a need to sell.
If you don’t adopt this mindset then you will struggle to get what you want out of life. When you find yourself in a situation where selling is vital, start by asking:
- Do I understand their world?
- What problem am I going to solve for the person I am pitching to?
- What do I know about my audience?
- What value do I bring?
- What examples can I use to evidence credibility?
- How can I bring to life the impact I make?
- What is special about what I have to offer?
Personal progression means you must embrace the philosophy of life is a pitch. In doing this you condition yourself to delivering an effective and engaging performance to those that matter. Convincing others of the benefit of your talent, idea, product or service is an integral component to achieving your goals. Other people have an influence on whether we succeed or not. Your pitching mindset should help you to position your key messages in the following way:
- Real and tangible
- Deliver it with passion and meaning
- Ruthlessly simplistic message
- Clearly shows the difference you will make
- Win – win outcome
Practicing your pitching skills to enhance your chances of success. It will put you in a stronger position to beat off competition.
The UK needs more sales professionals. It’s a core skill many of the successful business people and entrepreneurs I have met possess. They commit time, effort and energy learning how to sell, they train hard and learn how to build long lasting relationships and win-win outcomes with customers.
Those individuals who learn how to effectively sell will always have employment, they get the highest paid jobs and many often go on to set up their own business. They enjoy fulfilling careers and make a big difference to their employers.
The call centre and door to door commissioned sales, sales-rep provides the classic view of a career in selling – the reality is these can be both highly paid positions and they provide a grounding in the vital skill of having a great telephone or face to face conversation – essential to success and personal progression.
Train hard, learn, read and hone your sales skills – it will deliver a long lasting and profitable career.

Fear of the unknown can have a massive impact on our ability to realise our business dreams. Virtually anyone that has succeeded in their profession, career or sport has been able to overcome their inner fears. Fear comes in many shapes and forms, it could be:
- Fear of losing a big contract
- Fear of being unable to provide for our family
- Fear of speaking in public
- Fear of providing personal guarantees to support growth
- Fear of taking on that new overseas market
In many instances fear is an emotion we create in our own mind and it often results from negative self talk. Fear can hold us back from doing what we want to do and what we want to achieve – it acts as a barrier to personal and business progression. The emotional turmoil created by fear stunts our personal growth, creates self limiting beliefs and leads to a lackluster performance that will not get you your desired outcome
By getting into the habit of confronting our fears, we release the internal brakes of the mind – this allows us to move forward with our personal intentions and create the life and career we desire. Mind conditioning is required if we are going to overcome the fears that hold us back. We must get into the habit of listening to those fears but asking ourselves – how real are they? Do away with those fears by:
- Taking small steps to overcoming those fears by forcing yourself to take action
- Visualise the outcome you want – not the fear factor
- Ask yourself how real is the fear?
- Dispel the invisible audience that fear creates in the mind
- How much do you want success? If you cant do away with the fear, disappointment will result
Surrendering to fear will hold you back, don’t fall victim to it, take positive steps to embrace fear and push through it. Once in the habit you will never look back – almost anything becomes a possibility.
You must have self-belief if you going to achieve your goals. There is no point embarking on a mission unless you are one hundred per cent certain you can succeed. The mindsets you start off with will largely dictate whether you are going to fulfill your aspirations. So, if you keep telling yourself you can succeed then you probably stand a good chance of doing so. The converse is also very true.
The mindset of Believe You Can is crucial to delivering a winning performance, it’s where it all starts:
BYC thinking must manifest into the use of positive words and actions, these must be congruent with the goals you set. If these two elements fall out of sync we can start to question whether we have what it takes to succeed. Keep repeating this phrase and after a while it will sink into your subconscious mind. The necessary activities needed, will then follow. Such mental programming will point you in the winning direction. It also acts as the antidote for negative self-talk. There must be an extremely strong bond and level of connectivity between BYC and the goals you set for yourself!
The BYC philosophy should become integral to your everyday life. If as part of your career or profession you manage or lead teams of people, it is your responsibility to embed such a thought process. No successful team ever wins without start off thinking that it can!
It is often the case that new projects and initiatives need to get off to a flying start this means that high levels of motivation and energy are required to mobilise resources. Where team inputs are needed, firstly, ensure everyone knows where there are going and secondly ensure there is a collective belief that success is attainable. Teams that don’t engage with BYC will be at a serious disadvantage. Its starts with you! Foster the right climate to get the successful outcome.
