Our mind is constantly in dialogue with itself about what it is observing in the outside world. These internal discussions stimulate a whole raft of feelings and emotions some positive and others negative. As part of our conditioning for success and growth, it is vital that we listen very carefully to what we are saying to ourselves as this commentary can have a powerful effect on the shaping of our life and the business we run.
The debates can influence our outlook, what we want and what we believe – the perceptions that result from what we are thinking ultimately builds the framework for how we perceive the world – for many of us this perception is reality. Used correctly we can use mind discussions to give us exactly what we want, it will catalyse your route to success. However, if used the wrong way our dreams and aspirations can be seriously sabotaged by negative self talk. Think on!
Watch your thoughts; they become words.
Watch your words; they become actions.
Watch your actions; they become habits.
Watch your habits; they become character.
Watch your character; it becomes your destiny
Sustained periods of failure can lead to a decay of our internal motivation, incidents or experiences that resulted in humiliation, anger, disappointment, fear, hurt or injury can trigger a whole series of inner discussions that result in negativity. Moving into the winning zone means that you must be acutely aware of the words and thoughts that swirl around in your mind – you can quickly rewire your thought patterns by simply ignoring any negative self talk such as “I will never achieve”, “I just cant do it”. You must replace these with more positive words.
Some simple and easy steps can be embedded within your daily routine to ensure you eliminate the negative self talk that all too often stunts our personal (and ultimately, business) growth and hinders the progression to achieving our goals:
- Take time every morning to clear the mind of negative experiences that the day before held. Telling yourself that today will be better gets us off to a good start.
- Be constantly and consciously aware of what you are saying to yourself
- Stop judging what you see as being right or wrong, just accept it for what it is – by doing this you use far less emotional energy.
- Eliminate phrases such as I can’t – replace them with I can or I will
Internal self talk has a great influence on the outcome of your success, make it a habit to keep using positive phrases of thought – over time you will become more positive and the peaks and trough in your moods will flatten out – you will become energised by positive thoughts and you will attract circumstances and situations that match your frame of thought.

You must have self-belief if you going to achieve your goals. There is no point embarking on a mission unless you are one hundred per cent certain you can succeed. The mindsets you start off with will largely dictate whether you are going to fulfill your aspirations. So, if you keep telling yourself you can succeed then you probably stand a good chance of doing so. The converse is also very true.
The mindset of Believe You Can is crucial to delivering a winning performance, it’s where it all starts:
BYC thinking must manifest into the use of positive words and actions, these must be congruent with the goals you set. If these two elements fall out of sync we can start to question whether we have what it takes to succeed. Keep repeating this phrase and after a while it will sink into your subconscious mind. The necessary activities needed, will then follow. Such mental programming will point you in the winning direction. It also acts as the antidote for negative self-talk. There must be an extremely strong bond and level of connectivity between BYC and the goals you set for yourself!
The BYC philosophy should become integral to your everyday life. If as part of your career or profession you manage or lead teams of people, it is your responsibility to embed such a thought process. No successful team ever wins without start off thinking that it can!
It is often the case that new projects and initiatives need to get off to a flying start this means that high levels of motivation and energy are required to mobilise resources. Where team inputs are needed, firstly, ensure everyone knows where there are going and secondly ensure there is a collective belief that success is attainable. Teams that don’t engage with BYC will be at a serious disadvantage. Its starts with you! Foster the right climate to get the successful outcome.
Confidence is a key element to high performance and going the extra mile. When you have confidence you feel that you can take on the world – but be careful that this confidence does not come across as arrogance – always underpin outward facing high energy with humility.
Confidence can be viewed in context of three dimensions – inner self, external you and your profession or vocation:
Inner confidence – your game plan for life should be clear and you are comfortable with the direction in which you are heading. By setting personal intentions and putting energy into moving towards them you achieve a clear sense of purpose, it makes getting out of bed a pleasure. When you have a real meaning to what you do, you feel energised and motivated to get on with things
Outer confidence – physical well-being and feeling comfortable with our appearance does away with any inhibitions that we may have about ourself. If you feel over weight, unfit then this can have a negative impact on confidence. Take time for regular exercise, this is both mentally and physically stimulating.
Professional confidence – being the master of your trade, career, vocation or profession makes you confident when interacting with others. When you know your stuff and you are well prepared with your knowledge and expertise you do away with nerves associated with lack of understanding.
Communication with others whether that be one to one or to a group becomes easier when we can tick each of the confidence boxes. When any element is out of sync we end up with an uncomfortable feeling that manifests itself into lack of confidence. When these three areas are aligned we become comfortable with who we are and we reach a state of being confident in our own skin. We connect more effectively with others and take on new challenges far more easily.
The term “thinking out of the box” does my head in. Easy to say hard to do – how do you do it? Get to the route cause!
Don’t fall into the trap of routine. Repetitive behaviours will deliver a mindset that lacks vision, imagination and creative spirit. When we do the same things day-in day-out we establish a routine, this state of mind both inhibits and prohibits new possibilities. We find that the same old problems surface and bizarrely we think that by doing the same thing over and over again the results will be different. We must be aware of our habits as they become hard wired into our daily schedule. The manifestation of routine is that we experience a sense of monotony, feeling of being stuck in a rut, poor self confidence, low energy levels and loss of purpose and direction.
Everyone experiences these feelings at some point, however we can take some simple steps to rewire our thinking. Emphasis must be placed on constantly searching for stimulus – things that will disrupt habitual behaviour, strengthen our creative muscles and deliver a freshness of thought;
Alternative perspectives – constantly look at your challenges from different angles – ask yourself “how would your role model address the issue?”
Remove yourself – from the daily routine and spend one day a month do something completely different.
Connect with nature – spend time in the open air and appreciate the wonder of the countryside. Combine this with regular exercise, it provides a boost to our energy levels. It also helps us to value our existence.
Don’t Think – don’t pre judge the outcome of any situation. Just observe and detach yourself from comment. By not thinking you clear your mind.
Take a look – observe what your peers do and share experiences with them. Wherever possible engage with people from other cultures, religions and regions of the world.
Five simple practices will act the fuel for fresh thinking. Doing away with routine is a liberating experience. It energises us, and keeps us motivated to perform at high levels.
